What is 919?

What is the meaning of 919?

It simply refers to an event which occurred on September 19, 1846.

That day “a Beautiful Lady” – later to be identified as our Blessed Mother – appeared to two poor, uneducated children on the slopes of the French Alps near a small mountain village called La Salette The children’ names were Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud. Both had been born in the small town of Corps, about 10 miles further down the valley. Both were from poor, unfortunate families.

The eldest in a poor family, Mélanie, now not quite 15 years old, had been hired out to shepherd cattle in the surrounding mountains since she was 8 years old. Without schooling, she spoke only the native mountain dialect.

Maximin was an urchin boy 11 years old. His mother had died a few years earlier, and his stepmother took little care of him. Unruly and mischievous, he roamed the streets with his dog Loulou and received no schooling.

It was to these two uneducated children that Mary appeared on September 19, 1846. She brought a message of hope – not a ready-made hope but one that gave promise to those who heard with an open heart. They had met one another for the first time two days earlier, and the day of 9/19 changed their lives forever.
